Dome Tower, Modern skyscraper in Calgary, Canada
Dome Tower is a modern skyscraper in downtown Calgary standing 141 meters tall across 35 floors. The structure contains office space and connects to surrounding downtown areas through its central location.
The tower opened in 1977 during a period of economic growth and business expansion in Calgary. Its completion represented the start of more intensive development in the city's financial district.
Dome Tower is the north tower of Toronto-Dominion Square, named for Dome Petroleum, while its south twin honours the Home Oil Company. The two 35-storey towers rise from a five-storey base designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with J. H. Cook and Associates. The podium holds the Devonian Gardens, an indoor botanical park on the top level of the retail space, maintained by the City of Calgary.
The building sits in the heart of downtown and is easily reached on foot or by transit. The area has good pedestrian connections and flows directly into surrounding downtown streets.
The design was reused in 1980 for Town Square in Saint Paul, Minnesota, by the same firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The complex's podium holds the Devonian Gardens, an indoor botanical park on the top level of the retail space, maintained by the City of Calgary and reopened after a major overhaul in 2012.
