First Peoples Mountain, Mountain peak in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, US
First Peoples Mountain is a peak in the Absaroka Range located on the eastern side of Yellowstone Lake. The mountain rises from the surrounding ridge and forms a distinctive landmark in the northeastern section of the park.
The peak received its current name in 2022 when the United States Board on Geographic Names approved a change following consultations with tribal representatives. This renaming reflected efforts to recognize Native American heritage in the park's geographic features.
The name honors Native American communities and acknowledges their long presence in this region. Today, the peak serves as a reminder of these peoples' connection to the Yellowstone area.
The mountain can be viewed from several vantage points along the eastern shore of Yellowstone Lake, accessible via marked hiking trails throughout the park. Best views of the peak are available from the lakeside trails, particularly in early morning light.
The renaming was shaped by consultations with 27 different tribal nations, making it a particularly meaningful process for these communities. This extensive collaboration in the renaming demonstrates how important it was to incorporate voices from multiple indigenous groups.
