Tuya Mountains Provincial Park, Provincial park in Stikine Region, Canada
Tuya Mountains Provincial Park is a protected area in the Stikine Region featuring volcanic terrain with steep mountains and flat-topped volcanic formations at the Tuya River headwaters. The park displays distinctive geological features shaped by ancient volcanic activity.
The area became a provincial park in 2001 when the British Columbia government designated it to protect geological formations and wildlife. This designation recognized the scientific and ecological importance of the volcanic landscape.
The protected area lies within traditional territories of three First Nations groups: the Tahltan, Kaska Dene, and Teslin Tlingit communities. These Indigenous peoples maintain ongoing connections to the land and its resources.
The park is extremely remote and accessible only by floatplane or helicopter from Dease Lake. Visitors should expect multi-day hikes and extended expeditions to explore the area.
The park contains rare subglacial volcanoes called tuyas that formed beneath ancient glaciers. These distinctive geological structures create flat-topped peaks that set the park apart from other volcanic landscapes.
