Sign Post Forest, Territorial historic roadside attraction in Watson Lake, Canada.
Sign Post Forest is a collection of over 80,000 directional signs, license plates, and markers from worldwide locations spread across several hectares. The signs are mounted at varying heights and angles, creating a dense array of text and metal.
In 1942, Private Carl K. Lindley of the 341st Engineers began this collection by posting a sign pointing to his hometown of Danville, Illinois. What started as a single personal gesture grew over the decades into an internationally recognized site.
Travelers from around the world leave their marks by adding signs, license plates, and personal markers representing their hometowns and countries. This ongoing collection reflects the personal connections people feel to the wider world.
The Interpretive Centre operates from mid-May to mid-September and provides materials and tools for visitors to create their own signs on site. It helps to arrive early to find a good spot to work, especially on warm days or during peak season.
A time capsule buried during the 50th anniversary celebration in 1992 remains sealed beneath the collection until 2042. Visitors can only wonder what objects and messages were stored for future generations.
