Cunningham Lake, lake in Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, British Columbia, Canada

Cunningham Lake is a large reservoir in central British Columbia, situated at high elevation and surrounded by forests and mountains. The cold, clear water stretches over 13 kilometers of shoreline, with trees growing close to the edge and small islands scattered throughout.

The Yekooche people have inhabited this area for thousands of years, relying on the lake for fishing and trade routes. In the 1800s, fur traders from the Hudson's Bay Company passed through, and in the early 1900s a fish hatchery operated on the inlet creek before families eventually moved away.

The lake holds deep meaning for the Yekooche people, whose ancestors have lived here for thousands of years and called it Yeko Bun. Their reserve on the south shore remains an active center of community life, hunting, and fishing traditions that continue to shape how people relate to the landscape.

The area is remote and requires preparation for quickly changing weather conditions that can shift from sunshine to rain without warning. Trails wind around the lakeshore offering access to lookout points, and visitors should plan for early mornings or evenings when the landscape feels most open and the air is clearest.

The lake was originally called Tadulh by local First Nations people, a name with roots in ancient meaning that was replaced by its current name in the early 1900s. Today it is also known as Yeko Bun in the Carrier language, preserving a linguistic connection to the land's oldest inhabitants.
