Stantec Tower, Skyscraper in downtown Edmonton, Canada
Stantec Tower is a 66-storey, 250.8-metre mixed-use skyscraper in the Ice District, northwest of downtown Edmonton. Its lower 29 floors hold offices and retail space, while the upper floors contain 454 residential units known as SKY Residences. The tower stands beside Rogers Place, home of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.
Stantec's own engineering and design team unveiled the project on August 26, 2014, initially as a 62-storey, 224-metre tower; the final plan grew to 66 storeys and 251 metres. Foundation work began in autumn 2014, construction rose above grade in August 2016, and the tower topped out on November 16, 2018, becoming the tallest building in Canada outside Toronto. It was completed in 2019.
The tower stands as a modern landmark that reflects Edmonton's growth as a business and residential center. The building brings together people from different professions and backgrounds who share the same contemporary urban space.
The building is easy to spot from many directions in the city and serves as a useful reference point for navigation. Visitors can walk around the area or view the architecture from street level at different angles.
In 2021 and 2022, sections of glass fell from the tower onto surrounding streets. Ice District Shared Facilities then fitted a protective plastic film cut to each window and frame to hold the glass in place. The bottom 12 floors planned as SKY residences became rental units in October 2020 after a pandemic-driven shift in demand.
