The Big Texan Steak Ranch, Steakhouse restaurant in Amarillo, United States.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a steakhouse on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, housed in a yellow building with blue accents. The complex includes several dining rooms decorated in a Texas ranch style, along with a motel, brewery, and gift shop.
Bob Lee opened the restaurant in 1960 on Route 66, then one of the main roads through Texas. After a fire, he relocated the operation in 1970 to the newer Interstate 40, which had replaced Route 66 as the main route.
The restaurant holds a daily public challenge where guests attempt to finish a large steak with sides within one hour. Participants sit on a raised stage where other visitors can watch them take on the task.
The complex sits right off the highway and is easy to spot thanks to the large yellow building and outdoor signage. Visitors will find ample parking on site, including space for buses and larger vehicles.
A glass display case near the entrance shows newspaper clippings and photos of visitors who have successfully completed the steak challenge. The restaurant also ships frozen steaks by mail to customers across the United States.
