Baoruco Province, Province in southwestern Dominican Republic
Baoruco is a province in southwestern Dominican Republic covering approximately 1,282 square kilometers of varied terrain. It contains the Sierra de Neiba mountain range and sections of Lake Enriquillo within the Enriquillo Region.
The province separated from Barahona Province in 1943, with Neiba becoming its capital. Territorial adjustments followed in 1952 when Independencia Province was created from part of its territory.
The five municipalities maintain agricultural traditions through banana cultivation in Tamayo, grape growing in Neiba, and coffee production in the mountains. These farming practices shape daily life and connect local communities to their land.
Reach the province through national highways connecting to major Dominican cities. Local transportation services operate between the municipalities for getting around the region.
Lake Enriquillo within the province contains salt water and lies 31 meters below sea level. This makes it the lowest elevation point in the entire Caribbean.
