Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni, Catholic shrine in Medan, Indonesia
Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni is a seven-story church shrine in Medan with a tower that incorporates Indonesian architectural features. The structure blends elements reminiscent of church, temple, and mosque designs, creating a distinctive appearance that stands out in the cityscape.
Tamil Catholic workers brought to Medan by French and Dutch plantation companies in the late 1800s founded the congregation that built this shrine. Over time, this community established deep roots in the city and created a space for their spiritual life.
The shrine reflects the heritage of Tamil Catholics who settled in Medan generations ago, blending their traditions with local architectural customs. Visitors can feel how the space honors both Indian and Indonesian identities through its design and decoration.
The shrine is open weekdays from 8:00 to 18:00 and until 19:00 on weekends for visitors and prayer. Guests should dress appropriately and respect the rules for sacred prayer areas within the building.
The entire construction was funded exclusively through donations from individual believers, with no formal fundraising committee or fixed financial structure. This grassroots support reflects the deep commitment of the Tamil Catholic community to their faith.
