Circuit de Monaco, Street racing circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco
The Circuit de Monaco is a street racing circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco, stretching 3337 meters through narrow lanes and around the harbor. The course runs through 19 turns with noticeable elevation changes, passing hotels, apartment buildings, and marinas, with some sections barely two car widths wide.
The first races took place here in 1929 when organizers decided to use the narrow city streets for a competition. Over the decades, some sections were modified, but the basic layout and character of the course remained largely unchanged.
For Monaco residents, the race becomes the most important event of the year, turning everyday streets into a stage for speed. Few venues offer spectators such a close view of drivers passing just centimeters from barriers and building walls.
The course is used for racing only a few days each year, otherwise it remains a regular traffic street with lights and crosswalks. Visitors can walk or drive the full loop and see the spots where cars squeeze through tight passages.
A section of the course runs through a tunnel where visibility switches from bright daylight to darkness in seconds. The sudden change in light makes it harder for drivers to control speed and steering precisely while continuing to race.
