Bad Ischl, Spa town in Salzkammergut region, Austria.
Bad Ischl is a spa town in the Gmunden District of Upper Austria, where the Ischl river flows into the Traun. The buildings spread between mountain slopes and river valleys, with the town center grouped around a compact historic core.
Salt extraction began in the 16th century and shaped the local economy for hundreds of years. In the 19th century, doctors brought the healing properties of brine to light, after which the Habsburgs regularly spent summer stays here.
The name comes from a Celtic word for flowing water, while the prefix »Bad« has been official only since 1906. Along the pedestrian streets, sign painters and gingerbread makers display traditional crafts passed down through generations.
Most attractions are within walking distance in the center, while the surrounding area is covered with hiking trails. The season between spring and autumn is suitable for walks along the rivers and visits to the public gardens.
The promenade along the Traun displays plane trees over 100 years old, with roots now partially breaking through the pavement. In winter, the water from local springs is used for natural ice rinks on open squares.
