Vernagthütte, Alpine refuge in Sölden, Austria.
Vernagthütte is a mountain hut in the Ötztal Alps near Sölden, Austria, set between the Guslarferner and Vernagtferner glaciers. It offers dormitory-style sleeping quarters and a basic kitchen for overnight guests passing through this high-altitude terrain.
The German Alpine Club built this hut in 1901 as a base for climbers exploring the high routes of the Ötztal region. Over time, it became a key stopping point for glacier research in the area.
The hut sits close to the Vernagtferner, one of the most studied glaciers in the Alps, and researchers still visit regularly to monitor it. Staying here puts you in the company of both hikers and scientists, which gives the place a particular, no-nonsense character.
The hut is reached on foot from Vent, following a path that passes through Rofenhöfen and gains a fair amount of elevation. The terrain is alpine, so solid boots and good physical condition are needed before setting out.
The hut has its own rock climbing garden where visitors can practice basic techniques right on site. This makes it something more than a simple transit point on the way to harder routes.
