Jamtalhütte, Mountain refuge at 2165 meters in Silvretta Mountains, Tyrol, Austria.
Jamtalhütte is a mountain hut in the Silvretta range in Tyrol, Austria, sitting at around 2165 meters (7100 feet) between glaciers and rocky summits. It offers sleeping space in shared rooms along with a dining hall and common areas for climbers and hikers using the surrounding routes.
The hut was founded in 1882 and has been part of the German Alpine Club network ever since. The Lorenz family took over its management many decades ago and has run it continuously, making it one of the longer-serving family-run huts in the region.
The Jamtalhütte draws people who want to spend time in the high alpine world rather than just pass through it, and the shared meals in the dining hall are a central part of that experience. Walkers and climbers from different countries often end up at the same tables, exchanging route tips and stories from the day.
The walk up to the hut starts from the village of Galtür and takes around three hours on a marked trail. The terrain varies along the way and includes stream crossings and wooden bridges, so solid footwear makes a real difference.
The hut is occasionally used for seminars and group gatherings, which is unusual for a building at this altitude. This means it sometimes hosts people who have come not to climb but simply to meet and work together in a high mountain setting.
