Plauener Hütte, Mountain hut in Zillertal Alps, Austria
The Plauener Hütte sits at 2,363 meters elevation in the Zillertal Alps with views over the turquoise Zillergrund reservoir and surrounding peaks. The building contains sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a dining room where hikers and climbers can rest and stay overnight.
The refuge was built in 1898 and has served as an important shelter for climbers in the eastern Zillertal Alps ever since. It has housed generations of mountaineers over more than a century and witnessed their expeditions in this demanding mountain range.
The hut serves as a meeting place where climbers gather, share experiences, and enjoy regional Tyrolean food before heading into the mountains. It functions as a social hub for those navigating the high alpine terrain.
The hike to the hut starts at the Zillergrund dam and follows marked trail number 502 through tunnels and forests. The walk takes about two and a half hours and requires moderate fitness and sturdy footwear.
The area around the hut features waterfalls that plunge directly into the reservoir, creating a spectacular sight on sunny days. Some hiking trails in this region follow old smuggling routes that were once used for trade between North and South Tirol.
