Babenstuberhütte, Mountain refuge in Ellmau, Austria.
Babenstuberhütte is a mountain hut in the Kaiser Mountains at around 2300 meters elevation, positioned just below Ellmauer Halt. The shelter provides lodging and meals for hikers navigating the exposed ridgeline terrain with views across the surrounding peaks.
The hut was established in 1891 and has served mountaineers ever since as a basic shelter and stopping point. Its original location near the summit proved vulnerable to lightning strikes, which led to relocation down the mountainside to protect the wooden structure.
The Turner-Alpenkränzchen Division of the German Alpine Club maintains this mountain shelter, continuing the tradition of alpine hospitality.
The hut can be reached from Ellmau village in roughly 5 hours on foot, though a shorter approach via Wochenbrunner Alm takes about 3.5 hours. Weather conditions change quickly at this elevation, and the rocky terrain requires sturdy hiking boots and careful footing throughout the approach.
The hut sits at a convergence point where multiple notable peaks meet, including Ellmauer Halt, Gamshalt, and other adjacent summits that form a distinctive rocky skyline. This location serves as a hub for technical climbing routes and is favored by alpinists seeking to traverse multiple formations in a single outing.
