Amaras Monastery, Stone monastery in Sos, Azerbaijan
The monastery complex includes fortification walls, a main church, and an underground burial chamber accessed through western staircases.
Gregory the Illuminator established the monastery in 301, making it one of the earliest Christian centers in the Caucasian region.
Mesrop Mashtots founded the first school using the Armenian alphabet at Amaras Monastery in the early fifth century.
The underground tomb measures 1.9 meters in width, 3.75 meters in length, and reaches a height of 3.5 meters.
The monastery served as a border fortress for Russian Imperial troops during the first half of the nineteenth century.
