Absheron-Khizi Economic Region, Economic region in eastern Azerbaijan
Absheron-Khizi Economic Region is an area in eastern Azerbaijan composed of Absheron district, Khizi district, and the industrial city of Sumgait. The territory covers about 3,730 square kilometers (1,440 square miles) and includes both coastal zones and semi-desert landscapes.
The area was established in 2021 as part of a major administrative restructuring when Azerbaijan reorganized its economic zones. This reorganization reflected the country's economic priorities and regional development strategies.
The region maintains strong industrial traditions centered in Sumgait, where manufacturing facilities contribute significantly to Azerbaijan's national production capacity.
The area connects well to the capital Baku through multiple transportation corridors, making it easy to reach from the city. Being near the coast and established trade routes makes it accessible for visitors and business travelers.
The area contains Masazir Lake, which produces substantial amounts of salt through natural evaporation in the semi-desert climate. This natural salt extraction shapes the landscape and is a notable feature of local resource management.
