Stadion Grbavica, football stadium
Stadium Grbavica is a football ground in Sarajevo that serves as the home venue for FK Željezničar. The facility features stands close to the pitch, which measures approximately 105 meters long and 66 meters wide with a hybrid grass surface equipped with irrigation and heating systems to ensure playable conditions year-round.
The stadium opened in 1953 after construction began in 1949 to give FK Željezničar a permanent home ground. During the 1990s war, it suffered severe damage including fires to the wooden stands, but returned to use in 1996 with the first post-conflict match helping to mark the community's recovery.
The stadium is known locally as Dolina ćupova, or Valley of Jugs, a nickname that reflects how the ground sits nestled in a small depression surrounded by hills. On match days, supporters gather with songs and displays, particularly when FK Željezničar plays, creating an energetic atmosphere filled with community spirit.
The stadium is easily accessible by public transportation including buses and trams running nearby. Arriving early on match days allows time to find parking, purchase food and drinks, and settle into your seat before the game begins.
In the 1980s, the stadium hosted a UEFA Cup semifinal where FK Željezničar faced Videoton, drawing thousands of passionate supporters to witness a major European football moment. This match remains one of the most memorable events in the club's history despite the narrow defeat.
