Cybernetic Light Tower, Modernist tower in Parc de la Boverie, Belgium.
The Cybernetic Light Tower is a 52-meter-tall steel structure in Parc de la Boverie with moving metal panels, colored projectors, and electronic sensors throughout its frame. These components work together to create light and sound displays that shift based on environmental conditions.
The work was created in 1961 by artist Nicolas Schöffer as a completely new idea at the time. After decades of being inactive, it underwent full restoration in 2016 and has operated according to its original design since then.
The tower shows how art and electronic systems can work together and respond to their surroundings. Visitors watch a sculpture that reacts to wind, light, and noise by creating shows of color and sound.
The best time to visit is in the late afternoon or evening when the lights are most visible. The park is easy to reach on foot and there are clear paths leading directly to the tower.
Multiple sensors gather data about wind speed, light levels, humidity, and sound from the surroundings. This information automatically controls which lights and sounds are generated, making every show different from the last.
