Berghütte Sokolna, Mountain hut in Stara Planina, Bulgaria
Berghütte Sokolna stands at 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) elevation in the Central Balkan range and provides basic lodging facilities in a two-story structure. The building houses 43 beds, a dining room, a small shop, and a summer terrace where visitors can rest.
Construction started in 1972 using volunteer labor and donated materials, with the building completed in 1984. The project was a community effort to make the mountain range more accessible to hikers.
The hut serves as a meeting place for hikers and mountaineers traveling the Balkan trails. Many visitors use it as a base for multi-day journeys through the high country.
Reaching the hut requires hiking skills as access is only by foot on marked mountain trails through steep terrain. The best visiting season is May through October when weather is more stable and trails are clear of snow.
A marked trail from the hut leads to Masalat Peak, a six-hour hike across the Central Balkan range with some of the most rewarding views in the region. The route attracts experienced hikers seeking high-altitude perspectives.
