Allan Gardens, Botanical garden in downtown Toronto, Canada.
Allan Gardens is a botanical garden in downtown Toronto with five connected greenhouses. The site holds tropical plants, seasonal flower shows, and succulents from desert regions across roughly 16,000 square feet.
The first site appeared after the land donation in 1858, but a fire destroyed the Victorian conservatory in 1902. Reconstruction followed in 1910 with a new design that shaped the current structure.
The name honors George Allan, a Toronto politician who donated the land for public use. The greenhouses now serve as a free retreat for local residents and provide a contrast to the surrounding downtown area.
The greenhouses open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM with free admission. The surrounding park offers an off-leash area for dogs and walking paths.
The Palm House maintains different temperature zones for various plant species and allows tropical types to grow in a northern climate. The greenhouses attract year-round visitors even during Toronto's long winters.
