Katannilik Territorial Park, Territorial park in Qikiqtaaluk Region, Canada

Katannilik is a provincial park in the Qikiqtaaluk Region featuring a major river system that cuts through deep valleys. Multiple waterfalls cascade down the valley walls throughout the protected territory, creating a landscape shaped by flowing water and steep terrain.

Archaeological evidence including tent rings shows that early hunting peoples occupied this territory approximately 4000 years ago. These remains indicate long-term human presence adapted to this harsh environment.

The name Katannilik derives from Inuit language meaning place of waterfalls, reflecting the deep connection between local communities and the natural landscape.

Visitors can hike a long-distance trail that extends between two coastal communities and passes through the heart of the park. Basic shelter stations with essential facilities are positioned along the route for multi-day travelers.

During high tide the river mouth experiences a rare phenomenon where water flows backward as ocean and freshwater meet. This unusual effect creates a visible interaction between two different water systems.
