Noor Cultural Centre, Islamic cultural centre in Don Mills, Canada.
The Noor Cultural Centre was an Islamic institution in Toronto's eastern district that offered educational programs, interfaith dialogue, and community events. The facility focused on Islamic education through lectures and workshops while also operating a school for children.
The building was designed by architect Raymond Moriyama in 1963 and initially served as a Japanese Canadian cultural institution. In 2003, the Islamic Noor Centre took over the space and transformed its purpose.
The centre served as a gathering place for Muslims in Toronto and hosted conversations between people of different faiths. Visitors came for lectures and workshops on Islamic topics, as well as community events that brought people together.
The centre's physical location closed in October 2021 and now operates entirely through online programming. People can participate in virtual courses and community forums from anywhere.
The original building featured latticed windows in the main hall that reflected the experiences of Japanese Canadians during World War II. These architectural details told an important story about the place's previous chapter.
