Tshopo dam, Hydroelectric power station in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Tshopo Dam is a hydroelectric power station built across the Tshopo River near Kisangani to generate electricity for the region. The facility uses turbines that convert the force of the river's waterfall into power for local communities and the city.
Construction of the facility began in the 1950s at Tshopo Falls as an energy project for the region. After decades of operation, the dam underwent major repairs and returned to service in 2013.
The dam construction created employment opportunities for local communities while changing traditional fishing practices along the Tshopo River.
The dam can be reached by taxi or motorcycle from Kisangani city center and has viewing areas for safe observation. Check locally about current access conditions and the best times to visit since operations and visitor areas may change seasonally.
The site was chosen because it had the only waterfall in the area with enough water pressure to power large turbines. The project resulted in the disappearance of a rare plant species from this location, leaving only one other place where it survives globally.
