Grindelwald, Alpine village in Bern, Switzerland
Grindelwald is a village at 1034 meters (3392 feet) elevation in the Interlaken-Oberhasli district, surrounded by mountain peaks and green valleys. Houses line the valley floor while steep mountain flanks frame the scene on all sides.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1146, when it formed around geographical features such as a barrier and forested areas. Over the centuries, it grew into a destination for mountain enthusiasts from around the world.
The name comes from an old High German term for a wooden barrier and the forest that once defined the valley. Today you hear many languages spoken in the streets, as visitors from around the world gather here.
The village is easily reached by train and offers several stations for access to different mountain destinations. Most paths and facilities are manageable even for less experienced visitors.
An indoor climbing and rope park offers the chance to practice rope techniques without depending on good weather. Families and groups often use this facility as an alternative to outdoor activities during rain or snow.
