Dix Hut, Mountain hut near Hérémence, Switzerland
Dix Hut is a mountain shelter located at 2,928 meters (9,606 feet) in the Valais Alps. It sits above the Cheilon Glacier and serves climbers and trekkers moving through high alpine terrain.
The Swiss Alpine Club built the first wooden shelter at a lower elevation in 1908. The current stone structure was constructed at its present location in 1936.
The mountain hut functions as a central point on the Haute Route, welcoming thousands of mountaineers each year with traditional Swiss alpine hospitality.
The shelter can be reached through several routes, including trails from Grande Dixence Dam or from the village of Arolla via Chèvres Pass. Visitors should prepare for rough alpine conditions and bring sturdy footwear and warm layers.
The kitchen serves a regional dish called Roesti des Dix made with sliced potatoes, bacon pieces, cheese, and fried eggs. This hearty meal is a popular evening choice for mountain climbers after long days on the trails.
