Konkordia Hut, Alpine mountain hut in Valais, Switzerland.
The Konkordia Hut is a mountain hut run by the Swiss Alpine Club, sitting at around 2,850 feet (2,850 m) at Konkordia Platz in the Valais Alps. It offers sleeping spaces and meals for those traveling across the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.
The hut was founded in 1877 by the Swiss Alpine Club, making it one of the earliest shelters built in this part of the Alps. Over time it was enlarged several times to keep up with the growing number of mountaineers and glacier walkers passing through.
The hut has been a meeting point for mountaineers from across Europe for well over a century, used as a resting place on the way to major summits. Inside, long wooden tables and benches invite guests to share an evening with strangers who made the same journey.
Getting to the hut requires experience in glacier travel or the guidance of a mountain guide, as the route crosses crevassed terrain. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, since space fills up quickly during the summer season.
The hut is now perched on a rock face that was once buried under the glacier, because the ice has retreated so much over the decades. This means the approach route and the view from the hut have changed noticeably within living memory.
