Britannia Hut, Mountain hut at 3030 meters in Valais, Switzerland
The Britannia Hut is a mountain hut in Valais, Switzerland, sitting at around 9,940 ft (3,030 m) below the Allalinhorn beside the Allalin Glacier. It offers sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and shared rooms where climbers rest and get ready for routes on the surrounding peaks.
The hut was donated in 1912 by British mountaineering clubs to the Geneva section of the Swiss Alpine Club, marking the start of a close bond between Swiss and British alpinists. That connection has shaped how the place has grown and been maintained over the decades.
The name of this hut reflects its British origins, and that spirit is still felt inside the communal rooms today. Climbers from many countries share meals and route plans at long tables, giving the place a welcoming, international character.
Reaching the hut requires solid physical fitness and basic mountaineering gear, including crampons and a rope, as the route crosses glaciated terrain. Setting out early in the day is strongly recommended, since conditions at this elevation can change quickly and the path becomes harder to follow after dark.
To mark its centenary in 2012, solar panels were installed at the hut with British support, allowing it to generate its own power at high elevation. This means the hut can charge batteries and run its lights without relying on fuel deliveries to such a remote location.
