Gorges de Rosenlaui, Natural gorge in Reichenbach Valley, Switzerland

Gorges de Rosenlaui is a deep canyon cut through limestone near Reichenbach Valley, bordered by steep rock walls that tower overhead. Water cascades through multiple waterfalls and has carved fascinating sculptural shapes into the stone over thousands of years.

The pathway through the gorge was blasted through rock in the early 1900s using explosives to create a safe route for travelers. This engineering effort opened the canyon to visitors and transformed it into a popular hiking destination.

The name comes from wild roses that once grew on the slopes, and the gorge became a beloved destination for hikers over generations. Visitors can observe how water continuously shapes the stone, creating new formations and patterns that draw people back repeatedly.

The path through the canyon is walkable but narrow and slippery in places, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Arriving early helps you enjoy the space without crowds and gives you time to explore at a leisurely pace.

Over thousands of years, the Weissenbach River has hollowed out limestone into unusual stone shapes that resemble animals and buildings. Many visitors enjoy finding familiar forms and creatures in the rock patterns as they walk through the canyon.
