Mutthornhütte, Mountain hut at 2901 meters in Bern, Switzerland
The Mutthornhütte is a mountain shelter in the Bernese Alps positioned at 2901 meters between glacier zones and offering sleeping places for climbers. The facility has basic rooms, a kitchen that prepares simple meals, and standard sanitary facilities adapted to the remote alpine setting.
The shelter was founded in 1896 by the Swiss Alpine Club and became a base for climbers aiming to reach the high peaks of the region. Over the decades it developed as a key support point for mountaineering expeditions and underwent various maintenance updates.
The shelter serves as a meeting place where mountaineers from around the world gather to share experiences and sustain alpine climbing traditions through their visits. Guests experience a sense of community formed by their shared passion for high mountain exploration and the rituals of mountain hospitality.
Reaching the shelter requires experience with glacier crossing and proper equipment such as ice axes and crampons. It is wise to hire a mountain guide beforehand and check glacier conditions, as they shift significantly with the seasons.
The building will be relocated to the western base of Mutthorn by 2026 to protect it from rockfall danger and ensure long-term operation. This relocation is one of the few known moving projects for a high alpine shelter in the Swiss mountains.
