Rotondohütte, Swiss Alpine Club mountain hut in Uri, Switzerland
Rotondohütte is a mountain hut located at 2570 meters (8430 feet) in the Uri Alps, offering shelter and meals to mountaineers and hikers exploring the surrounding peaks. The building serves as a base for alpine expeditions and multiday mountain traverses in this region.
The hut was built in 1906 and opened in 1909, during a period when glaciers in the surrounding area were used for ski activities. Its foundation reflects the growing development of the Alps for mountaineering and winter sports during that era.
The hut serves as a meeting place where mountaineers gather to share stories and prepare for their expeditions in the high peaks. This social tradition is central to Alpine climbing culture.
Book overnight stays in advance during peak seasons, as the hut has limited capacity. Access conditions change with weather, so it is wise to check current mountain conditions before heading up.
Between 2015 and 2019, volunteers built new paths through scree fields around the hut to replace old trails that had become impassable from landscape erosion. This work demonstrates how constantly changing alpine conditions require regular updates to mountain routes.
