Gaulihütte, Mountain hut in Bern, Switzerland
Gaulihütte sits at 2,205 meters elevation in the upper Urbachtal valley beside Mattenalp Lake and Gauli Glacier. The building provides 65 sleeping spaces with duvets and 25 with wool blankets for visitors staying in this Alpine setting.
The hut was built in 1895 and marked a turning point in the development of mountain accommodations in the Bern region. It later became known through a dramatic event that fundamentally changed air rescue in Switzerland.
The hut serves as a gathering place for mountaineers and hikers who meet and share their mountain experiences here. It represents the tradition of Alpine climbing in Switzerland and brings together people who love being in high places.
The place is only reachable on foot and requires good fitness and solid mountain hiking experience. It is important to book in advance with the Swiss Alpine Club and prepare for changing Alpine weather.
In 1946 a Dakota aircraft crashed nearby, leading to the founding of Swiss Air Rescue. This rescue operation was a milestone in the history of Alpine emergency services.
