Lom Pangar Dam, Hydroelectric power station in East Region, Cameroon
Lom Pangar Dam is an embankment dam and hydroelectric power station on the Lom River in eastern Cameroon. It holds back the river to form a large reservoir, with water directed through turbines to produce electricity for the national grid.
Work on the dam started in 2012, carried out by a Chinese construction firm, and the facility began operating in 2017. The project had been planned for several decades before financing was finally secured.
The reservoir has drawn fishermen and traders from different parts of the country, who have settled along its shores. The surrounding villages have changed as a result, with small markets and landing points appearing near the water.
The dam is located in a remote part of eastern Cameroon and is most accessible during the dry season, when road conditions improve. Anyone visiting should be prepared for long travel times and limited facilities along the way.
The reservoir was designed in part to regulate water flow for two other power stations further downstream. By controlling the water supply to those facilities, output can be kept steadier throughout the year, even during dry periods.
