Mvog-Betsi Zoo, Wildlife sanctuary in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Mvog-Betsi Zoo is a zoological garden in the heart of Yaoundé, home to a wide range of African animal species. The grounds are divided into separate sections for lions, primates, reptiles, and birds of prey, all connected by walking paths.
The site was founded in 1951 as a private animal quarantine center. In 1971 the government took over and opened it as a public zoo.
The zoo is one of the few places in Cameroon where schoolchildren and families can watch native animals up close. Many visitors from Yaoundé come regularly to see animals that are rarely spotted in the wild today.
The paths are clearly marked and guide you through all sections of the grounds. A morning visit is a good idea, as animals tend to be more active at that time of day.
Part of the zoo is managed by Ape Action Africa, an organization that focuses on primate care. This section houses mandrills, baboons, and other primate species in specially designed enclosures that differ visibly from the rest of the park.
