Dongbaoxing Road Gurdwara, Sikh temple in Hongkou, China
The Dongbaoxing Road Gurdwara is a Sikh temple in Shanghai featuring red brick walls and arched doorways. The building shapes the streetscape of Hongkou with its religious architecture and currently serves as residential and community health clinic space.
The temple construction began in 1907 under architect R.C. Turner and opened in 1908 as a gathering place for hundreds of worshippers. It survived the air raids of World War II while surrounding structures were destroyed.
The gurdwara served as a center for spiritual gatherings and political activism among Sikhs during the Ghadar movement between 1913 and 1917.
The former temple building can be viewed from outside but is privately used as residential and clinic space. Visitors should treat the location respectfully and check beforehand if tours or access are possible.
While neighboring structures were destroyed during World War II bombings, the gurdwara remained standing despite sustaining damage from the conflicts.
