Wenzhou, Prefecture-level city in southeastern Zhejiang, China
Wenzhou is a large administrative division in southeastern Zhejiang, China, with mountainous landscapes and settlements spread along the coast. The area stretches over rugged rock terrain and is organized by several islands and river deltas.
During the Song dynasty around 999 the settlement became a foreign trade harbor and developed shipbuilding and paper manufacturing. In later centuries industrial activity grew into today's production economy.
Local business practices and trade traditions reflect a long merchant history that extends from the harbor to today's enterprises. Small workshops and family-run operations shape many neighborhoods and show the daily life of residents.
Longwan airport connects with major cities while two railway stations offer trains to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. As a surface-rich territory distances between different parts are quite large.
Local operations produce roughly one-fifth of all shoes worldwide and support a global export logistics system. These production figures make the region an important site for manufacturing chains and trade.
