Pingdingshan, prefecture-level city in Henan, China
Pingdingshan is a major city in southern Henan Province with nearly 5 million people spread across 10 districts and counties. The terrain slopes from the Funiu Mountains in the west to flat plains in the east, and a river runs through it from west to east.
People have inhabited this region for thousands of years, with ancient sites showing early farming communities. The city grew rapidly in the 20th century after large coal mines opened in the 1950s, bringing new infrastructure and worker settlements.
The city is sometimes called Eagle City, a name rooted in its landscape and identity. Visitors can see this reflected in daily life through temple visits, riverside walks, and local dishes like Hui Mian noodles that locals enjoy for breakfast or dinner.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, when the weather is mild and nature looks its best. The nearest major airport is in Zhengzhou, about an hour away, and buses connect the city to nearby airports.
The city is known as Coal City and sits on one of the largest coal deposits in central and southern China, which drove its rapid industrial growth in the 20th century. This legacy remains visible today in the infrastructure and worker settlements built around the mining industry.
