Reting Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Lhünzhub County, Tibet, China.
Reting is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated in the mountains with multiple buildings constructed from clay and stone. The complex includes a large main hall with religious chambers and extends across a substantial site.
A student of the Indian scholar Atisha founded this site in 1056 as the first center of a Buddhist school. Later the monastery was reformed and adopted a different religious direction.
The monastery holds sacred texts and religious artworks that remain central to faith in this region. Monks use the halls daily for prayers and ceremonies that shape the rhythm of life here.
This site is located several hours drive from the nearest city and sits at high altitude in a mountainous region. Visitors should prepare for cool weather and allow time for walking up the slopes.
The grounds are surrounded by thousands of old cypress trees that have grown there for many centuries. These trees are older than the monastery itself and give the place a distinctive character.
