Altay Prefecture

The prefecture extends across 118,015 square kilometers of land, encompassing seven administrative divisions including one city and six counties in northern Xinjiang.

Established on September 1, 1954, Altay Prefecture became part of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, maintaining strong connections with neighboring Kazakhstan and Russia.

The population of 561,667 residents includes a majority of ethnic Kazakh people, representing 51 percent of the total inhabitants according to census data.

Altay Airport maintains regular flight connections to Ürümqi, while the region experiences temperatures ranging from -16°C in January to 22°C in July.

Archaeological findings in the region include cave paintings dating back 10,000 to 30,000 years, depicting early forms of skiing activities.
