Jianfu Temple, Buddhist temple in Beilin District, China
Jianfu Temple is a Buddhist temple in northwestern Xi'an featuring several important structures arranged within its grounds. The complex includes the Mahavira Hall for worship, the Compassion Pavilion, and a repository for Buddhist scriptures, alongside the Small Wild Goose Pagoda which rises from the courtyard.
The temple was established in 684 under its original name and underwent significant transformation in the early 700s. Its role shifted to become a major translation institute for Buddhist scriptures, reflecting the empire's interest in spreading Eastern teachings throughout society.
The temple served as a major center for translating Buddhist texts into Chinese. Monks worked here to spread teachings through written works that reached scholars across the region.
The site is located within the grounds of Xi'an Museum on the west side of the city and connects easily to the metro system. Plan time to walk through the different buildings and courtyards to fully experience the layout and architecture.
A massive cast-iron bell from the 12th century was recovered from the riverbed after spending centuries underwater and now sits on display as a remarkable artifact. This recovered piece represents one of the finest examples of bell casting from China's imperial period.
