Chao Lake, Freshwater lake in Hefei, China.
Chao Lake is a freshwater lake in Anhui Province, close to the city of Hefei, and one of the largest inland lakes in China. Its shoreline alternates between flat sections and small peninsulas, offering several points where visitors can easily approach the water.
The lake basin holds archaeological remains from Stone Age settlements, pointing to some of the earliest human presence in the region. Over the following dynasties, communities continued to settle along its shores, each leaving traces that are still being uncovered today.
Mushan Island sits at the heart of the lake and holds the Wenfeng Tower, where visitors can see Buddhist statues and ancient stone tablets. The tower draws people who want to experience the religious and artistic traditions that have shaped the area over centuries.
The lake is accessible by bus from Hefei, with the trip taking around an hour and a half. Autumn tends to bring clearer skies and cooler temperatures, while summer can be hot and humid along the water.
The lake basin sits below normal sea level, a natural feature that creates conditions rarely found in inland lakes. This makes the water unusually productive for fishing, and silver fish, shrimp, and crab caught here are a common sight on local menus and in nearby markets.
