Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Public research university in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a public research university on the hillside above Clear Water Bay in Hong Kong. The site spreads across several terraces with concrete and glass walkways connecting separate building clusters.
The institution opened in 1991 when Hong Kong rapidly expanded its higher education sector and aimed to create more places for technical studies. The site was built on previously undeveloped hillside land.
The campus blends Western academic traditions with Asian learning habits and attracts faculty from every continent. Students often work in groups outdoors between buildings or in glass-walled library spaces overlooking the sea.
Visitors can usually enter the grounds freely and walk between buildings as long as classes are not disturbed. The campus sits on several elevation levels, so paths are sometimes steep or connected by escalators.
Much of the newer construction stands on artificially flattened plateaus cut out of the steep slope. The building works moved more earth than many other construction projects in Hong Kong at the time.
