Jinge Temple, Buddhist temple on Mount Wutai, Shanxi Province, China.

Jinge stands between the South and Central Peaks of Mount Wutai at an elevation of roughly 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), situated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Taihuai town. The main complex contains more than 1,000 Buddhist statues distributed across multiple halls, each with specific religious purposes.

This site was founded in 766 CE by Shi Hanguang during the Tang Dynasty and became connected with the Buddhist master Amoghavajra, who spread Vajrayana teachings. The temple developed over centuries as an important center for this branch of Buddhist practice.

This site serves as a destination for pilgrims traveling between the five peaks to visit different sanctuaries and make offerings. You can sense its importance from the continuous activity of visitors lighting candles and making prayers throughout the day.

The site sits on steep mountain terrain, so be prepared to walk between buildings and move between different peaks. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months.

A bronze Avalokitesvara statue standing 17 meters (56 feet) tall with 48 arms dominates the complex, cast during the Ming Dynasty and marking the tallest Buddha figure on the entire mountain. This sculpture demonstrates the artistic skill required to create such a complex and detailed form.
