Yanshan Temple, Buddhist temple in Fanshi County, China
Yanshan Temple is a Buddhist sanctuary in Fanshi County comprising multiple halls built with traditional Chinese religious architecture. Its rooms contain detailed Buddhist artwork that reflects centuries of Chinese craftsmanship and design.
The temple was founded in 1158 during the Jin dynasty and underwent extensive rebuilding during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. These ongoing works preserved its structure and allowed it to survive to the present day.
The Manjushri Hall displays intricate wall paintings depicting Buddhist teachings and reveals how Chinese artists expressed religious traditions through their work.
The site is protected as a national cultural monument and can be visited to explore traditional Buddhist architecture and religious practices. The mountainous surroundings also allow for walks around the sanctuary.
The temple was originally called Lingyan Temple and stands on the northern side of the Wutai mountain region. Its remote position in these mountains gave it a sheltered character throughout its history.
