Béthanie, Historic building complex in Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong.
Béthanie is a building complex in Pok Fu Lam featuring Gothic Revival architecture, with spaces designed for performance and artistic education. The main structure and several attached buildings have been carefully preserved and converted into contemporary performance and teaching venues.
French missionaries built the complex in 1875 as a sanatorium for priests suffering from tropical diseases, also operating a printing press on-site. After decades of medical use, the buildings eventually transitioned to cultural purposes.
The complex now hosts performance studios and teaching spaces where artists and students regularly rehearse and present different art forms. These rooms serve as a gathering place for the local performing arts community.
The complex sits on Pok Fu Lam Road and is accessible by walking or public transport, with guided tours and performances offered regularly. Visitors should check ahead to see which areas are open, as some spaces may be in use for classes or rehearsals.
Two former cowsheds were creatively converted into performance spaces with ribbed vaults and stained glass windows, forming an unexpected link between rural past and artistic present. These rooms retain their original structure while being adapted for contemporary use.
