Haizhu Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Yuexiu District, China
Haizhu Bridge is a steel truss bridge crossing the Pearl River and connecting Yuexiu and Haizhu districts in Guangzhou. The structure spans 486 meters and was built to carry road traffic between the two banks.
American contractor Markton Company built the bridge from 1929 to 1933, making it the first crossing over the Pearl River in Guangzhou. It later suffered damage and was rebuilt, showing how important it was for connecting the city.
The bridge is a working part of daily city life, showing how infrastructure connects distant neighborhoods. People cross it every day as part of their commute, making it an ordinary part of how the city functions.
The bridge carries traffic in both directions and is accessible to vehicles and pedestrians. Visit during daylight hours to see the steel structure clearly and move safely across.
The bridge was damaged twice in conflict, first by Japanese forces and later by the Kuomintang, but was repaired each time. These reconstructions reveal how critical the connection was and how often local builders had to rebuild it.
