Guangzhou, Megacity in Pearl River Delta, China
Guangzhou is a megacity in the Pearl River Delta in southern China. The sprawling urban area stretches along both sides of the river, with modern tower blocks and residential neighborhoods lining the waterfront.
The city grew into a major trading center during the 7th century, establishing early maritime links with foreign merchants. This position as a gateway for sea trade shaped the city for centuries and made it a starting point for commerce with distant lands.
Locals gather in teahouses during morning hours for dim sum, served alongside tea and conversation. This daily ritual known as yum cha shapes how people start their day, bringing families and friends together over bamboo steamers filled with dumplings and small dishes.
The metro network connects major neighborhoods and the airport, with color-coded lines and bilingual signage at stations. Routes also reach riverside promenades and shopping streets that run through the center, easy to explore on foot.
Shamian Island in the river preserves 19th-century colonial architecture that stands apart from the rest of the city. Its tree-lined lanes and old facades make it a quiet retreat amid the dense urban surroundings.
