Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, Transport infrastructure in Pearl River Delta, China.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a bridge and tunnel in the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong, China. The structure runs about 24 kilometers across and beneath the water, connecting both shores on a direct route.
Work began in December 2016 and finished in June 2024. During this time, engineers solved several challenges related to ocean currents and water depth.
The infrastructure connects the technology hub of Shenzhen with the manufacturing center of Zhongshan, reducing travel time between cities from two hours to thirty minutes.
Drivers crossing the structure will find eight lanes with speeds around 100 kilometers per hour (about 60 miles per hour). The crossing takes roughly half an hour depending on traffic and connects both sides of the delta without detours.
An underground section of roughly 6.8 kilometers (about 4.2 miles) runs directly beneath the seabed of the delta. At two points, the route surfaces again and transforms into high bridges, allowing larger vessels to pass beneath.
