Nantou, Shenzhen, Ancient walled settlement in Nanshan District, China.
Nantou is a walled historic settlement in Shenzhen, China, made up of narrow lanes, old stone houses, and fortification walls dating to the Ming Dynasty. It sits in the Nantou Subdistrict and is one of the few remaining historic urban cores in the area.
The settlement was founded during the Ming Dynasty and served for centuries as the main administrative hub for the region south of the Pearl River Delta. During the Qing Dynasty it kept that role before the rapid growth of Shenzhen eventually shifted power elsewhere.
The South Gate opens onto a web of narrow lanes where residents shop, eat, and go about their day among old stone buildings. Walking through the alleys, you can see how everyday life continues inside walls that have stood for centuries.
Nantou has several entry points and is best explored on foot, as the lanes are narrow and largely closed to vehicles. Visiting on a weekday gives you more room to move and a better sense of how the place feels day to day.
Inside the walls there is an old stone building that was used in the 1890s as a meeting point between Chinese and British officials, making it a rare site of colonial-era exchange in this part of China. It still stands today with little signage, visible from the surrounding lanes.
