People's Park

People's Park is an urban green space in central Guangzhou with interconnected walking paths threading through landscaped areas. The grounds feature floral gardens and open lawns that provide breathing room in the city.

The park opened in 1921 as Guangzhou's first park, built on land that once held regional government offices from the Sui dynasty. This marked the shift from administrative use to public recreation.

Daily gatherings here bring together local residents who practice traditional singing, dancing, and tiqiu, a Chinese game with wooden sticks. These activities reflect how the space has become woven into the rhythm of everyday city life.

The main entrance sits at 2 Lianxin Lu, accessible via Metro exit F at Gongyuanqian station nearby. The flat terrain and clear pathways make it easy to explore at your own pace.

The grounds once housed the residence of Zhang Zhidong, a powerful Viceroy of Liangguang who wielded significant influence. The site also served as a proclamation location for a Ming prince, showing its former importance as a seat of power.
